In what may be the largest regional price gap in gaming history, Epic Games Store pre-orders for FIFA 23 recently went on sale in India for Rs 4.80. That equates to around $0.06 USD.
The price was a mistake, of course: FIFA 23 is priced at 3,499 Indian Rupees (INR), which is equivalent to about US$44.17. That would make the accidental price 99.86% off, but there’s more. The wrong price was not for the regular version of FIFA 23. It was for the Ultimate Edition, which costs INR 4,799. That brings the discount to 99.98%, and everyone who took advantage of it will be able to keep the game, according to an email from EA (which we saw via Sportskeeda). (opens in a new tab)).
“A few weeks ago, we scored a pretty spectacular own goal when we inadvertently offered FIFA 23 pre-purchase on the Epic Games Store at an incorrect price,” EA wrote in the letter. “It was our mistake, and we wanted to let you know that we will honor all advance purchases made at that price.”
An EA Sports representative confirmed to PC Gamer that the message is accurate. For the rest of us, there’s good news and bad news when it comes to FIFA pricing. The good news is that the PC version of FIFA 23 is not the next-gen console version like FIFA 22 was. It’s the same version that appears on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with the same trademark features ( the main one is “HyperMotion2 Technology” this time). The bad news is that we’re also paying current-gen console price: $70 in the US and £60 in the UK, the new norm for big cross-platform games.
In India, the price has also increased between FIFA 22 and FIFA 23, from INR 2,999 to INR 3,499 for the standard version and INR 4,299 to INR 4,799 for the Ultimate Edition. EA didn’t say how many people got the accidental 99.98% discount, but they must feel pretty good about it.
FIFA 23 turns out to be the last EA FIFA game, at least for now, because EA Sports and FIFA are parting ways. EA will continue to make soccer games, but under the EA Sports FC name. Meanwhile, FIFA is still planning for FIFA games to exist, but we’re still not sure how it’s pulling it off.
Unlike FIFA 23, the PC version of Madden NFL 23 will be the next-gen console version for $60. I’m not sure why that series is falling behind on PC, but EA Sports told PC Gamer he wants to create parity between the PC and console versions of the current generation of Madden going forward.
FIFA 23 will be released on September 30. I wouldn’t count on seeing more 99.98% discounts sooner or later, but I guess you never know. Black Friday sale?
