The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a near contact at JFK worldwide airport on Friday evening in which two planes practically collided on the runway.

The incident took location amongst a Delta Air Strains plane certain for the Dominican Republic and an American Airways flight.

At about 8.45pm, as the Delta aircraft was accelerating down the runway for takeoff, the American Airlines aircraft appeared to shock it by crossing the runway forward.

In a statement, the FAA reported that “air traffic controllers discovered another plane crossing the runway in entrance of the departing jetliner”.

“Delta 1943 terminate takeoff clearance!” an air targeted visitors controller introduced twice.

The Delta flight responded by slowing down and inevitably coming to a halt. At their closest the two planes reportedly handed in just 1,000ft of each other.

A passenger on the Delta flight instructed NBC Information there was a “split second of panic” on board that sparked “audible reaction” from people on the flight.

“I felt the adrenaline, and there was whole silent on the airplane – and then there was reduction when the plane arrived to a stop,” Brian Healy reported.

The Nationwide Transportation Basic safety Board (NTSB) declared on Sunday that it is also investigating the “runway incursion”.

The Delta Air Traces flight experienced 145 passengers and six team members onboard. Right after the incident the flight was postponed util Saturday morning, and Delta arranged for the passengers’ lodging in the course of the hold out.

Delta mentioned it is cooperating with authorities in the investigation.

“The safety of our customers and crew is often Delta’s range a person priority,” it claimed in a statement. “We apologize to our shoppers for the inconvenience and hold off of their travels.”
