In 2021, at the height of the world’s collective blockchain craze, a video game called Wild Isles—Pokémon, but with crypto stuffmade over $500,000 on Kickstarter. A year later, the game is practically dead and so broke that it can’t even reimburse its backers.

In a post on the game’s Steam pagethe devs have said “we need to pause development on Untamed Isles and put the project on hold”, which sounds only temporary until you read the rest of what they have to say:

There have been a myriad of factors that have caused the lead up to this very moment, but it all comes down to us not being able to financially keep up with the demands of what we set out to do.

Untamed Isles is a very ambitious title being an open world monster capture MMORPG. To work on this project, we gathered over 70 staff members and worked tirelessly for over 2 years to create the game we all dreamed of. The truth is that the cost of development is high and there have been many bumps in our road to this point. Since we started the journey in 2020, the economic landscape has changed drastically both in general and specifically for cryptocurrencies, and we do not trust the current market. We are out of financial resources and cannot continue development at this time.

When they say “the economic landscape has changed dramatically,” they mean “the ass has fallen off the cryptocurrency marketin which we bet your money”:

We are leaning towards the cryptocurrency market and expanding rapidly thanks to the positive interest. When the accident happened, we ended up very exposed with a track that was too short. The game is still game first, crypto second by design, but crypto funds have become, and continue to be, essential to getting us to launch. Unlike a lot of the projects that flopped in the storm, we actually have great game design that could stand on its own. But until the crypto situation is resolved, and we are sure it will be at some point, we have to hibernate the development of this project.

And that ass has fallen so far that developers say in a separate post “Because our cash reserves are empty, we are not in a position to reimburse our initial sponsors. We are really sorry about this and wish this scenario was different.”

While this might be the part of the story where I say that everyone backing this game got exactly what they deserved, the fact is that untamed island The crypto elements were optional, and it’s clear from backer comments below the “pause” announcement on Kickstarter that a lot of people were only interested in the game itself, not its speculative elements:

untamed island “pause” is especially strange given it was only two weeks ago that the team was confirming a release date of October 6, 2022, and that one of their key promises at the time of the Kickstarter campaign was that “We are fortunate to have funds that allow us to safely deliver core functionality and the game”.
