Anel Ahmedhodzic’s first goal for Sheffield United was his first in three years.

Anel Ahmedhodzic scored one and made another as Sheffield United tightened against 10-man Sunderland.

The game turned into a two-minute passage just after the half-hour mark as Sunderland were reduced to 10 men, with the Blades taking the lead.

Dan Neil was dismissed by referee James Linington for bringing down James McAtee on the edge of the box and the hosts cashed in when Ahmedhodzic rose higher to head Oliver Norwood’s left corner powerfully. It was the first goal for the Swedish-born Bosnia-Herzegovina defender in three years.

Summer signing Ahmedhodzic then set up the second goal as Sunderland’s defense fell apart.

Norwood’s pass, intended for Sander Berge, got in the way of Ahmedhodzic, and his drive back from near the right baseline set up Max Lowe’s perfect right-footed shot at the near post.

Sunderland recovered the goal in the 55th minute when a poor pass from John Egan to McAtee was intercepted by Jay Matete and Ross Stewart took advantage of the loose ball, playing Lynden Gooch, who Gooch, who beat Wes Foderingham from outside the area.

But the visitors could find no other way, as Paul Heckingbottom’s Blades recorded their second win in four games this season.

In fact, they could have won by more. Berge came close to restoring United’s two-goal lead when his shot was deflected off the left post, and substitute Oli McBurnie was an immediate threat when he came on.

He hit a straight angled shot to Anthony Patterson, who then made a good save to avoid Norwood’s effort, before thwarting McBurnie twice more.
