Sir Alex Ferguson said Ryan Giggs had a “fantastic temperament” and was “the best example” he had at Manchester United when he gave evidence in his former player’s domestic violence trial.

The legendary manager arrived at Manchester Crown Court just after lunchtime and was called as a defense witness by Giggs’ solicitor Chris Daw QC.

He told the jury that Giggs was “hands down the best role model we had in the club” and “everyone looked up to Ryan Giggs as number one.”

When asked by Mr. Daw if he had ever seen him “lose his temper or become aggressive”, Sir Alex replied, “No.”

He told the jury he was Manchester United manager for 24 years and “first met” the young winger when he was 13.

Sir Alex, 80, said Giggs was playing for a local club at the time and was training at Manchester City’s ground.

He said: ‘After that, we visited his house to try to convince him to come to Manchester United. Me and my assistant Archie Knox.

Mr. Daw asked, ‘Did you get to know him as a child during that period?’

Sir Alex replied: ‘His main contact was his mother. She was very good. Very accommodating. Ryan was a quiet boy. He sat there listening to what he said to himself. His mother talked all the time.

He said they discussed the club’s ‘ambitions’, telling the court: ‘They had been going through a rough time when I came to the club in 1986.

‘We had a great job to do. We saw Ryan as a step towards a better situation with regard to young players.”

Sir Alex said that Giggs signed a schoolboy contract with Manchester United before breaking into the first team at the age of 17.

He continued: ‘That was the first time we had to really think about taking care of him.

“The thing was, the press started comparing him to George Best. We had to face a lot of attention on the boy.

‘I told his mother: ‘Look, if you can trust me, I’ll take care of him.’ If any medium reached him, it had to go through me. We did this to protect it.

“When someone says you’re the next George Best, that’s a big deal. But the boy was great, no problems. Any media outlet that approached him wanting to write articles had to do it through me.

Mr. Daw asked Sir Alex if he knew that Giggs had girlfriends.

The former coach said: “When we had dinner at the end of the season, he would bring a friend with him, yes.”

He said that Giggs played for Manchester United between the ages of 17 and 41 and had a “fantastic record”.

Sir Alex told the court: “When he grew up, the problem in the dressing room became: he used Ryan a lot in the sense that, when he lost his temper over the performance, he would sometimes use Ryan as an example.”

‘I grabbed the sharp tip of my tongue, but I knew I could take it, I was strong enough. Everybody else in the locker room would think, “If Ryan Giggs can take it, we can all take it.”

Sir Alex said Giggs had a “fantastic temperament”, telling the court: “To have as long a career as he had in a difficult position, in terms of energy, he fulfilled everything we ever wanted.”

He said the Welshman is “without a doubt the best example we’ve had at the club”.

“Everyone looked at Ryan Giggs as number one,” he added.

When asked by Mr. Daw if he had ever seen him “lose his temper or become aggressive”, Sir Alex replied, “No.”

Giggs, 48, denies using controlling and coercive behavior against Kate Greville, 38, between August 2017 and November 2020, assaulting her, causing her actual bodily harm, and common assault on her younger sister, Emma Greville, of 26 years.

The trial continues.
