“The Flash”: Warner Discovery investigates options on the film and Ezra Miller

The flash is rapidly evolving to include a subtitle: How to solve a problem like Ezra?

Warner Discovery focuses on the controversy surrounding lead actor Ezra Miller’s legal troubles. With this film, directed by Andy Muschietti, serving as the audience’s point of entry into the DC Multiverse and the return of Michael Keaton as Batman, Ezra’s choices couldn’t have come at a worse time.

To date, Miller, who identifies as non-binary, has had numerous run-ins with the law in recent months. The most recent is a felony charge of robbery a week ago and the disappearance of a mother and her three children who had allegedly stayed with Miller. Previous charges include assaulting a harassment charge in March, an assault charge in April and a disorderly persons charge in late June. Miller also deleted his social media accounts.

“The Flash” can move on, but what does it take from Ezra?

In light of these developments, the studio is debating one of three options on the table to salvage the release. The first is that Miller immediately seeks professional help, followed by a high-profile interview in which he takes responsibility for his actions. This may also save his future involvement in the Flash franchise as Barry Allen.

Muschietti’s film, based on the miniseries by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert Flash point, sees Barry go back in time to prevent his mother’s murder, which inadvertently alters the timeline. Audiences would therefore enjoy seeing Ben Affleck’s Batman before the trip, and would then be replaced by Michael Keaton’s old Bruce Wayne. It would also see the debut of Sasha Calle as Supergirl instead of Henry Cavill’s Superman.

If Miller refuses, the second option is to go ahead with the film’s release, but avoid the lead actor altogether and recast the role if the film’s revenue generates a sequel. It’s not unheard of to reprise a lead role despite a successful movie, but avoiding the lead actor for the necessary posting time would be unique.

However, the worst case scenario applies to Miller’s situation which continues to deteriorate. The third option is to shelve the film indefinitely, with the studio banking on an insurance payout to recover losses. Reshooting would be expensive and nearly impossible considering Miller plays multiple versions of Allen throughout the film.

Till the date, The flash is one of the few remaining DC franchises that Warner CEO David Zazlav hasn’t canceled. Also, it is one of the remaining properties that shares the continuity established by Zack Snyder’s Iron Man in 2013. Launches of Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, black adamY aquaman and the lost kingdom everyone goes forward. However, there have been some projects recently removed. Since the merger of Warners Media and Discovery, the studio has canceled the production and release of Bat girl, starring Leslie Grace, JKSimmons and Keaton. This would have been Keaton’s second appearance as Batman after The flash, but from a different continuity. Other canceled projects include the one led by Calle supergirl TV series spin-off of the movie and supposedly the next Green Lantern TV series on HBO Max. In related news, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Henry Cavill’s Superman have been confirmed to be included in a ten-year plan for DC movies modeled after the successful Marvel Studios-led MCU.

To date, the film is still scheduled to be released on June 23, 2023.
