I am constantly amazed at Wordle’s ability to take common words, words you would see a hundred times a day and somehow barely notice, and turn them into something strange and unfathomable. I love it, even when I lose. It’s like seeing something old in a new light.
Wordle today: a clue for Wednesday, August 17
If you have to repeat something, and in the end you have done something (a request, a task, whatever) exactly twice, have you done it…? Two vowels today, and at least one relatively rare consonant too.

Learn more about Wordle
Every day, Wordle presents you with six rows of five boxes, and it’s up to you to discover what secret five-letter word is hidden inside them.
you will want start with a strong word (opens in a new tab) like ALERT, something that contains multiple vowels, common consonants, and non-repeating letters. Hit Enter and the boxes will show you which letters you got right or wrong. If a square rotates ⬛️, it means that letter is not in the secret word at all. 🟨 means that the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you have the correct letter in the correct place.
You’ll want your second attempt to complement the first, using another “good” word to cover any common letters you missed last time while trying to avoid any letters you now know for sure aren’t present in today’s answer.
After that, it’s just a matter of using what you’ve learned to narrow your guesses down to the correct word. You have six tries in total and you can only use real words (so don’t fill in the boxes with EEEEE to see if there is an E). Don’t forget that letters can also be repeated (for example, BOOKS).

Wordle was originally devised by a software engineer joseph wardle (opens in a new tab), as a surprise for your partner who loves puns. From there it spread to her family and eventually became public. Since then, the word puzzle game has inspired tons of games like wordle (opens in a new tab), refocusing the daily hack around music, math or geography. It wasn’t long before Wordle became so popular that she was sold to the New York Times for seven figures (opens in a new tab). Surely it is only a matter of time before we all communicate solely on tricolor boxes.
