In a statement, Rajan said: “Being asked to host my favorite TV show is dream territory come true. I’ve seen University Challenge obsessively for years, addicted to its high standards, glorious title music and inspiring contestants.

“It’s the best possible antidote to cynicism about the young, allowing millions of us to test our wits against the best minds of a new generation, and annoy and impress our families by barking answers from the couch.”

In addition to mentioning University ChallengeThe first host of Bamber Gascoigne, who died earlier this year, Rajan stated that he was aware of the responsibility of succeeding Paxman.

“I have big shoes to fill,” Rajan’s statement continued. “With his immense intellect, authority, and respect from both students and viewers, Jeremy delivers as strong a format and show as ever.

“Today I will not stop thinking of my late beloved dad, whose devotion to education brought him to England, whose love of learning I absorbed as a child, and whose belief in the noble challenge of university shaped my life.

“I will dedicate my first Starter for 10 to him and to the millions of quiz fans who, like me, love those rare occasions when they know the answer before the students.”

“If future student contestants think they’ll have an easier ride with Amol taking over, they can think again!”
