#1 WBC, #1 WBO lightweight contender Lomachenko arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday to begin training for his October build-up fight against the undefeated Ortiz (16-0-1, 8 KOs).

The location and date of the Lomachenko-Ortiz fight are yet to be decided, but Top Rank should announce it soon.

Fighting the undefeated #7 WBC, #12 WBO Ortiz is a tough tune-up fight, as he is arguably more talented than anyone Lomachenko has recently faced apart from Teofimo Lopez.

Ortiz, a 26-year-old native of Worcester, Massachusetts, is coming off an upset 10-round unanimous decision victory over former super featherweight champion Jamel Herring last May. Ortiz completely outboxed Herring and sent him into retirement with the win.

“Vasiliy Lomachenko and Jamaine Ortiz have agreed to a lightweight fight targeting the end of October, sources told ESPN,” Mike Coppinger said.

“No site has been finalized for the Top Rank Boxing on ESPN main event, sources said.”

Lomachenko has been busy defending his country, Ukraine, against Russia in response to the recent invasion. Loma joined the Territorial Defense Battalion and has been busy until he decided to return to the ring to prepare for a fight against Haney.

Six-year pro Ortiz should be an excellent opponent for Lomachenko to prepare for a title shot next year against the undefeated Haney (28-0, 15 KOs).

Ortiz has the slick boxing skills that Haney possesses, but with more power and a willingness to mix it up on the inside.

At 5’8″, Ortiz will have the height advantage against the 5’7″ Lomachenko, but it’s not as big of a difference in size as when Loma fought the 5’11″ Masayoshi Nakatani last year in June.

This will be Lomachenko’s first fight in 2022 since he defeated Richard Commey by a 12-round decision last December.

Lomachenko looked excellent in winning his second fight in a row since losing his titles to Teofimo Lopez by an upset 12-round decision in October 2020. Loma took the fight to Teofimo with a torn right rotator cuff, which he has since undergone. surgery to repair.

All of Lomachenko’s efforts to get a rematch with Teofimo have since failed, as the New Yorker isn’t interested.
